Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from parents about primitive reflexes and our services.
Babies are born with automatic movement patterns that originate in the brainstem. These reflexes are essential for survival — helping with feeding, assisting through the birth canal, and kickstarting early motor development. During the first months of life, these reflexes wire the brain for focus, coordination, emotional regulation, and learning. Every milestone your child reaches — from crawling to reading — depends on this neurological scaffolding being in place. Between 4–12 months, reflexes naturally "graduate" as the brain develops higher-level control. The scaffolding comes down, and voluntary, coordinated movement takes over. This process is called integration. If integration doesn't happen on schedule, reflexes stay active in the background — competing with the brain for control. This shows up as fidgeting, handwriting trouble, sensory sensitivities, anxiety, and challenges often mistaken for behavioral issues or ADHD.
Children with retained reflexes often show patterns that look like behavioral issues but don't respond to traditional approaches. Our reflex guide walks you through some of the key signals for each reflex so you can start connecting the dots.
Every child is different, but some families begin seeing changes within the first few weeks of consistent practice. A full integration program can span anywhere from 3 to 6+ months depending on intensity of functional impact and consistency of participation in activity program. We will guide you through the entire process and adjust the program as your child progresses.
Currently, our reflex integration plans are geared toward children ages 4 and older. Primitive reflex integration activities and exercises can be adapted for any developmental stage. Our early foundations services are offered for children ages birth – 5. Our infant services focus on nervous system support for babies ages birth – 12 months.
Primitive reflex integration is a specialized area within the occupational therapy scope of practice. While traditional OT addresses a broad range of skills, our approach focuses more specifically on the neurological root causes, including primitive reflexes and sensory needs, that often underlie the challenges parents see.
Absolutely! Retained primitive reflexes are common alongside many diagnoses including, but not limited to ADHD, autism, sensory processing challenges, and learning differences. Integrating these reflexes does not replace other therapies or dismiss any diagnoses — it addresses the neurological foundation that may be making symptoms more intense. Many families report meaningful improvements even alongside existing treatment plans.
The discovery call is a free, 15 minute conversation where we discuss what you've been noticing with your child. Once you have booked a discovery call for reflex integration, you will receive a confirmation email including an extended checklist. This will need to be completed prior to the call as it will guide our discussion. We'll review questions and concerns and decide what services will best fit your child and family needs.
